About the Project
After receiving a wedding invitation with the dress code, “as fun and funky as possible”, I took to Pinterest to find inspiration for this unique dress code requirement. Upon researching garments from the 70’s, I stumbled across the Fendi by Versace Spring 2022 Milan Fashion Week show. This stunning gold lame dress stood out as the perfect look to try and recreate for this event. The process stretched from December 2022 to March 2023, and resulted in a vibrant green satin recreation of this garment would be a great test of my patterning skills. Along with this, I was able to share with my TWU students how exercises like this can help you understand challenging techniques, along with keep your patterning skills up to par.

I wanted this project to be a challenging one. From the start, I understood that this dress would be complex to pattern. However, it wasn’t until I spoke with my mentor that I realized just how deep and layered this pattern in.
Upon completion, the front bodice stretches just over 90 inches in width. Understanding how to layer the pleats with the collar with the sleeve and even down the drape of the dress made this project, often times, a challenge. In total, this pattern has 20 patterning techniques in it, with 18 of those being on the front piece alone.
Moving forward…
After showing this to my mentor at TWU, she also took it upon herself to recreate the dress for a client of hers. What we found interesting is how we both approached the project as a whole. We both ended up with extremely similar final products, but used certain patterning techniques in different places. Together, we are exploring the concept of taking how we approached the patterns individually to create a concept piece for submission to ITAA in 2025.
